February will see the arrival of DAMHSA, a new event to the An Droichead calendar celebrating dance and traditional music. The weekend event taking place on the 9th & 10th February will feature film, live performances and interactive dance workshops that all the family can take part in. 

 Opening on Friday evening 9th Feb at the MAC Belfast, audiences are invited to a free screening of The Dance, a documentary by filmmaker Pat Collins and featuring Kerry musician Cormac Begley it charts the creation over 9 weeks of an incredible and ground breaking piece of dance theatre by Teac Damsa entitled MAM. The Artistic Director of Teac Damsa, Michael Keegan Dolan is regarded as one of the most exciting choreographers working in Ireland today and he will attend In Conversation with journalist Robert McMillen after the screening. The evening conversation event follows a 5 day professional dance intensive by Theatre and Dance NI and Michael at The MAC. Friday’s events will conclude with a dance and traditional music session in The American Bar, led by well known local dancer and dance teacher Annette Collins. 

 On Saturday families with children of all ages are invited to attend a free dance workshop at 2 Royal Avenuein the City Centre. Beginning at midday, the workshop will be a fun and immersive introduction to traditional dance from master musician and dancer Caitlin Nic Gabhann. Later that evening in An Droichead’s performance space on Cooke Street, Caitlín will be joined by a host of Ireland’s finest dancers for a night of music and dance. Joe & Mary McGuigan, Seanín & Jonathan McCloy and Annette Collins will be joined onstage by acclaimed musicians Ciarán Ó Maonaigh and Jim McGrath.
